The Tempest

I know that things were different back in Shakespeare's time, but I couldn't help but feel a little offended by The Tempest. There are only two female characters in the whole thing: Miranda and Caliban's mother. Miranda is the Renaissance version of Paris Hilton. She is weak minded and falls in love with the first man she meets (rather than Caliban) even though she does not know him or even know that she can trust him. Calaban's mother is described as some kind of evil witch that Prospero kicked off the island, regardless of the fact that he had no real entitlement to it. It doesn't seem like there is one intelligent but kind female character in the whole play.
